One Thing I do Know

“He replied, ‘Whether he is a sinner or not, I don’t know. One thing I do know. I was blind but now I see!‘” – John 9:25

Here, John is recounting a story of Jesus miraculously restoring the sight of a man who was born blind. Jesus heals the man and, in short order, the man is brought before the Pharisees and teachers of the religious law and interrogated. The questions surround the identity of Jesus and how he was able to perform this miracle.

The Pharisees, who despise Jesus, show contempt for the man because he insists on giving Jesus credit for the healing. They don’t stop there, the Pharisees also call in the man’s parents to ascertain what is going on. They want to find any way they can to discredit Jesus, no matter who else they hurt.

Amid the accusations and questions, what Jesus points out to me today is the man’s reply, “Whether he is a sinner or not, I don’t know. One thing I do know. I was blind but now I can see.”

One thing I do know…

In essence, the man replied, “I don’t know the answer to all your questions, there are things I don’t know about Jesus. But, I will tell you what I know. I will share with you my experience.”

This is a beautiful picture of a man sharing his Jesus story. It may look a bit messy and that is part of the beauty. He can’t answer all the questions, but he doesn’t let that stop him. Jesus has changed his life and he says so. “One thing I do know…”

It should be that simple for us, too. We have had (and continue to have) experiences with Jesus that we can share. We have been forgiven, set free, redeemed, adopted, called, chosen, etc. Jesus doesn’t ask us to be his attorneys arguing his case. He simply asks us to be a witness, to share our experience(s). One thing I do know…

I think that too often we allow worry or fear to get in the way of our sharing. We are afraid of not having all the answers. We are afraid of how we might be treated or how the other person might react. There will always be questions we can’t answer and things we don’t know. We can’t have responses prepared for every argument, nor should we. Someone who is argued into the Kingdom can just as easily be argued out of it.

We simply, lovingly share that one thing… “One thing I do know…”

The best way to get back to that one thing is to personally answer these two questions:

What first drew you to Jesus?

What keeps you coming back?

Not only is it a great exercise for being a witness and helping share your experience, but it is also a great personal reminder of why you became a follower of Jesus and why you still follow Him today.

How about you? How would you answer the questions:

What first drew you to Jesus?

What keeps you coming back?

Prayer:

(Today, as you answer the two questions, take a moment to thank Jesus for His love for you and for your experience and relationship with Him. Ask forgiveness for the stuff that you allow to get in the way of that relationship. As you accept His forgiveness, ask Him to show you someone who needs to hear your Jesus story. Then, give Him some time and space to answer, to share His heart with you. He is GOOD and He loves you very much!)

Thank you, Jesus!
