Palace Building

“In the eleventh year in the month of Bul, the eighth month, the temple was finished in all its details according to its specifications. He (Solomon) had spent seven years building it. It took Solomon thirteen years, however, to complete the construction of his palace.” – 1 Kings 6:38-7:1

“However” — such a relatively small word that speaks volumes. In recording the building of the temple of the LORD and subsequently the king’s palace(s), the historian interjects commentary. He reveals his disdain for the discrepancy. Solomon spent 7 years building the temple. Such time and effort were put into the details of the temple. It sounds quite noble, almost awe-inspiring until the interjection. Solomon may have spent 7 years building the temple, but he spent 13 years building his own house. That is almost double the time.

Reading these verses gives me pause and brings conviction. The Holy Spirit is asking, “What are you spending your time building?” Even now, the question strikes its mark, “Where is your heart, your time, your attention, your focus? Are you building a life for you or a life with me?”

Palace building is necessary, I think. There is world work to be done, but not too much.

Jesus said, “Do not worry about what you will eat or drink or wear. Your Heavenly Father knows that you need these things and He will provide them. Do not worry. Instead, seek first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness and then all these things will be added to you as well.”

I notice that Jesus did not say to work for the Kingdom more than you work for these other necessary things. He did not say to make sure you spend more time building the temple than building your palace. He said, “these things will be added…” Not “Work for them and you’ll get what you deserve.” But, “They will be added.” Darrell won’t add them. Darrell won’t gather them. Darrell won’t make them happen. Simply, “they will be added.”

The inference is that GOD WILL ADD THEM. GOD will provide. God will meet the need. God will do that work. “Darrell, you seek first the Kingdom and God will add.” Darrell seek, God add.

Prayer:

Dad, why is it so easy to forget and get off track? Life comes so quickly and I too often slip into thinking something else is more important than my time with you. Like Solomon in these verses, I too often spend twice as much time palace building. Forgive me for this and help me change. Help me to seek you first, to “seek first the Kingdom of God and his (your) righteousness.” Help me to live my life fully surrendered to you, loving you, and keeping in step with you. Lord, thank you for continuing to invite me into your presence and for all the ways you provide. Thank you for loving me! “How great is the love the Father has lavished on us that we should be called sons and daughters of God! For that is what we are!” (1 John 3:1)

Thank you, Jesus!
